Climate Bonds Conference & Awards 2020

"We’re in the midst of a pandemic rooted in pathogens jumping between species as a result of environmental degradation. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has been telling us for 25 years that we can expect a 21st Century of pandemics and extreme weather shocks – climate change will not be like a slowly warming bath. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change also tells us that to avoid catastrophic climate change we have to get global emissions down 50% by 2030. That will require us to rapidly Transition our economy from high-carbon to low carbon; it will require us to not only build new green assets but to work with industries like steel, plastics, cement – and oil and gas – to deliver the Transition we need to meet those goals. The aim is to support the rapid growth of a transition bonds market as part of a larger and liquid climate-related market. We seek to deliver confidence for investors, clarity for bankers and credibility for issuers. The opportunity is immense."

Sean Kidney, CEO, Climate Bonds Initiative
